Linear Arm Operators
Linear Arm Operators are the Most Popular style of residential swing gate opener due to the ease of installation and attractive appearance. Also known as a Ram Arm Opener, this type features a linear actuator which is either mechanical or hydraulic combined with an external control cabinet that houses a low voltage transformer, a charge controller, batteries, and the circuit board itself. The electro-mechanical operators are more typically used on single family homes, they feature a worm gear driven jackshaft that has positioning controlled by cam driven limit switches, magnetic limit switches, or a magnetic encoder which counts the turns of the screw shaft. These units are all low voltage and will usually have built in battery backup. The hydraulic style of actuator uses a motor attached to a hydraulic piston, because they do not rely on limit switches or encoders they are typically required to have a set of positive stops installed on the gate to determine open and close position. These units are usually used on heavier and larger commercial gates. Older style hydraulic units were 110VAC or 220VAC only, but the newer models are now available with 24VDC battery backup and will typically have built in positive stops.
